Description of the genus
Fronds pinnatifid to pinnate, monomorphic, articulated. Sori circular to oval, mostly in 1 or 2 rows on either side of primary or secondary veins.
Derivation of name: poly: many, pous: foot; a refernce to the creeping rhizome with its many, spaced leaf stalks.
Worldwide: c. 100 species, cosmopolitan
